This post is long overdue (about 2.5 years to be exact) but I couldn’t pass up an opportunity to share our Whale Watching trip. Right after I moved here I got a job working at the front desk of a local hotel and I heard countless stories from hotel guests about their amazing whale watching experiences. That fall we had an abnormal amount of humpback whales feeding in the bay so people were seeing dozens on every trip. I was able to get passes through work and Andrew and I went on a chilly November morning.
What an experience! Throughout the 4 hour trip, we saw 75 humpbacks and thousands of sea lions (no dolphins, unfortunately ). The whales were literally everywhere and you could see them from wherever you were standing on the boat, which made it really nice since our tour was sold out and kinda crowded.
The whales and sea lions go down to the ocean floor and work together to feed. The ocean would be very still and quiet and then once we see the sea lions come to the surface we knew the whales were there too. They would be up for a few minutes before they went back down again. This was repeated over and over and it is was so neat to watch!
So if you’re ever visiting the Monterey Bay, or anywhere else that they’re offering whale watching, you should definitely take a trip!
