While it is hard to believe, living in California has had some downsides for us. When we live three thousand miles from home, we use our vacation time and money to travel home to visit our family and friends. Not that we don’t enjoy it, but it is hard to not be able to travel on our own. So when family wants to come your way for vacation, you pounce on that! Last year we were able to do a Yosemite trip with Andrews family, which turned out to be a blast! This year, my family started talking about a trip out to Lake Tahoe and Andrew and I were MORE than happy to help plan a trip.
We planned the trip for Labor Day weekend and stayed in South Lake Tahoe in the cutest little Air BnB condo. Andrew and I have been to Tahoe multiple times but never stayed in South Lake, so it was great to be near all the action…but it also meant being stuck in lots of traffic. If you ever go on a holiday weekend, be sure to plan extra time before and after activities for traffic to get to and from. We spent a lot of time in the car, but knowing that it was going to be a busy weekend helped us plan ahead of time.
My parents, sister and brother-in-law (we missed my brother and his family 🙁 ) traveled on Thursday and we met them up there after work on Friday. Little side note, Andrew and I had made a bet on when we would arrive…I bet we would make it before 11pm. I won the bet when we rolled in at 10:57pm!
Friday morning we slept in a little, sipped our coffee and chatted before heading out for the day. We decided to do our Emerald Bay hike on Friday to hopefully avoid some of the craziness. It turned out to work in our favor. We hiked the Rubicon Trail, starting in D.L. State Park and ending in Emerald Bay. This was our favorite hike that we did a few years ago and the family loved it! It offers multiple vantage points of the Lake with stunning views!
We probably stopped after every curve, taking photos and enjoying the scenery.
This trail is only about 4.6 miles from D.L. Bliss State Park to Emerald Bay, but with all the stops you’re likely to take, it’s best to take two cars and park one in Emerald Bay and one at D.L.Bliss.
As I was finally going through our photos this weekend, I realized that I had way too many for one post. So I will be getting more out this week. Stay tuned!
