After spending one day in Point Reyes the other week, we decided to head home along Highway 1. We made a trip up Highway 1 from San Diego to Monterey a few years ago when we first moved here, but we haven’t seen much of it north of us, so this was the perfect opportunity.
We first stopped north of San Francisco to grab some pictures of the Golden Gate bridge and explore the Marin Headlands. The lighting was a little harsh for pictures but we still had fun driving the windy roads and watching the many bikers riding the rugged road, promising ourselves that we would come back to do the same.
After scouting out some campsites and additional places to visit on another trip, we continued southbound for home. Highway 1 between San Francisco and Monterey is full of little beach towns, such as Half Moon Bay and Pacifica, which meant there was a lot more traffic than we expected due to the weather being in the high 80’s. We made a quick stop in Half Moon Bay where I squealed with excitement when I saw a Dunkin Donuts along the highway.
Our final stop for the day was at Pigeon Point Lighthouse. We sent a photo to our families with the “where are we today” caption and one of our family members guessed Maine. We laughed but then realized that this lighthouse and landscape did look like it might belong on the other end of the country.
Can’t wait to explore more of the Marin Headlands and, of course, visit Dunkin Donuts again in Half Moon Bay.
