October was gone in a flash….seriously, I blinked and now it’s over. Fall has always been my favorite season and October my favorite month, mainly because of the changing colors, the scents, and the fun autumn activities. While we don’t even come close to fall foliage here on the central coast of California, we try to take advantage of the season by doing numerous outdoor activities such as apple picking and hikes. I also love this time of year for the baking…apple cider donuts, pumpkin muffins, the list is endless! In October and so far this season, we have done none of these and I am determined to turn that around this next month. Here’s what I’m hoping to do this month and not let this season pass us by completely.
Bake– all the good fall things!! I’ve never tried apple cider donuts and had planned to make them over a MONTH ago and never did. Well, it’s still autumn so these will have to make an appearance on our kitchen table in the very near future. Also, every year since I was in college I have made pumpkin chocolate chip muffins (find that recipe here) so, of course, that will be repeated this year.
Read– while this may not seem like a necessary “autumn” thing to do, I love to cozy up with a good book with a cup of hot coffee or cider. I’ve sort of fallen off the reading wagon lately and haven’t been reading as much as I used to. I am working on a new list of upcoming reads and can’t wait to finish what I’m reading and get started on some new ones. Plus, with it getting darker earlier now there’s no excuse to not settle down for hours and get lost in a book.
Scents– Another one of my favorite aspects of fall is the delicious smelling candles. I am a huge lover of candles and normally burn them all the time, yet somehow I didn’t purchase any new fall candles this season. I actually have been burning a vanilla candle from last year but am hoping to get through an apple or cinnamon spice before I break out the pine scents for Christmas. In addition to the baking, I want to have our little apartment smelling like fall all the time!
Decorations– I don’t have a big enough place to decorate for each season but I do love adding little touches here and there that remind you of the season. This year we only got 3 little pumpkins for the place and didn’t get any for our door. I have to say, though, that since I kind of missed fall decorating I might jump right into Christmas a little bit earlier this year.
Activities– for the first time in probably 4 or 5 years we actually dressed up in costumes for a Halloween party our friends threw a few nights ago. Like I mentioned earlier, this was probably the only fall activity we have participated in so far this year. Before the official season is behind us we want to get in a hike or two, especially now that the California wildfires near us are completely contained. We are heading to Colorado this weekend to visit some friends and will be doing some hiking, so we hope to catch some of the last bits of foliage while we are there!
In addition to this list, I am just as bound and determined to not let this next season pass by as quickly. So you may see me getting ready for the holidays a tad sooner than usual, but who can blame me? This has always been my favorite time of the year and I am so excited to make this one better than the last!
What are some of your favorite things about fall? Anything I should add to this list before it’s too late?
