Our final stop from our weekend away (now almost 3 weeks ago!), we explored the beautiful coastal town of Cambria. Once we left Morro Bay, it was only a 25 minute drive up highway one. We stayed at the Castle Inn which was right off of the coast. After lots of walking earlier in the day at Morro Bay, we spent a few hours on the front lawn of our hotel, basking in the sunshine and reading.
After rehydrating and resting, we again ventured off to explore this part of the coast. There isn’t much in Cambria except endless coastal views and a small downtown area. Further up the road is where Hearst Castle is located, but we decided to nix that this trip. We’ve stopped there before and really wanted to spend our time outside enjoying the coast.
After catching the sunset, we grabbed a quick dinner and turned in early. The next day we had originally planned to drive back to Monterey along highway one. We had driven the whole thing from San Diego a few years ago, but were really looking forward to driving the portion between Cambria and Monterey again. Due to the massive amount of rain we’ve had lately, a large portion of the drive was closed from mudslides. So instead, we took our time in the morning and then explored downtown Cambria. While there isn’t much there, we popped into almost every shop that was open at 10am. One of those was a bookstore that was packed to the brim with books. At the rate we’re going collecting books, it made me think of what our basement might look like some day.
While we were bummed that we weren’t able to return via highway one, we drove route 46 back towards Paso Robles. This drive was so beautiful!! A few miles in we reached a vista point where we got out and took a few pictures. The lush green hills that met the ocean were breathtaking!
